Couple have focused on long term for 62 years

If you think you can manage your portfolio actively and beat the market consistently, try this for 62 years. I don't have the stamina for this game, do you? Instead, I like what this couple has done by following the three simple investment principles of Coffeehouse Investor. Besides financial freedom, community involvement throughout retirement is also important for this couple. Now, this is the kind of retirement I'd like to have.

Two new books

Two new books I ordered on Amazon.com have arrived.

The Only Guide to a Winning Bond Strategy You'll Ever Need : The Way Smart Money Preserves Wealth Today [Hardcover]
By: Larry E. Swedroe, Joseph H. Hempen

The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing [Hardcover]
By: Taylor Larimore, Mel Lindauer, Michael LeBoeuf, John C. Bogle (Foreword)

Thanks to my friend who brought it back from the US, I could order it with free shipping. Local book stores sell them at about S$45++. Crazy price. I am reading Larry's book. I am in need of some bond strategy for my portfolio.

By the way, when the tracking number from Amazon for the package arrived in my inbox, Gmail auto-generated a link at the side bar to take me directly to the UPS page, for tracking the package. I didn't have to type the tracking number, just two mouse clicks. Cool.

John Bogle's speech at The Money Show, May 2006

There was a Portfolio Ponderings at Coffeehouse Investor on 4 June 2006 but has been replaced by a new article. It is a summary of John Bogle's speech at The Money Show in May 2006. The old one did not get archived in www.kingcountyjournal.com as the other Portfolio Ponderings did usually. But I found it in Google cached page and posted it HERE.

Bogle, in a pointed presentation, offered up a compelling argument that future stock market returns are likely to be significantly less than long term averages
...

What happens if Bogle is correct in his analysis of future market returns? Investors are faced with two choices to address this challenge. You can seek out actively managed portfolios and bet the thin odds that your investments will outperform the market. Bogle puts your odds of winning this game at 9 percent or less. Alternatively, you can assure yourself that you will capture the entire return of this asset class through a low cost index fund, minus the minimal fees associated with these funds.
